Rental Inspection Photos: A Practical Guide

A useful inspection photo shows both context and detail. Capture what you can see without editing the image in a way that changes its meaning.

Start with context

Take an establishing view that shows where you are, then a closer image of the relevant feature. Include enough surrounding detail to orient someone who was not present.

Use clear captions

Name the room and feature in plain language. For example: “Hallway — lower corner of door frame, facing kitchen.” Avoid unsupported labels about cause or responsibility.

Make repeat visits comparable

When practical, use a similar angle and distance on later visits. Keep original images alongside the report and note anything that affected visibility, such as glare or stored belongings.

Remember local storage limits

Inspecterfly stores photos in this browser and does not upload them to a photo service. Device storage can be limited. Export JSON backups to include images, and keep a separate copy of important records.
